We are now offering the theme framework Xtreme One free of charge for collaborations in the community. Here is an overview of some of the most important questions and answers about its future development.
What is happening right now with Xtreme One?
As of now, everyone can contribute to the framework design. We have created a designated area on GitHub for that purpose, where the source code of the framework and the child themes is freely available – without any access limitations. The use of Xtreme One is therefore now free of charge.
If you would like to collaborate on Xtreme One (more about that in a minute), then we will provide you with a member access for the repositories. All you have to do is to log an issue on GitHub.
What are the plans for future development?
We want to hand over the project to the community and hope for plenty of participation. That means that development progress will no longer depend on us. The many supporters of the project will now have a chance to get more deeply involved. We will, of course, continue to take part in the development.
Why did we take this step?
There still are plenty of Xtreme One users out there. Its future success depends on the extent to which new developers and solutions – e.g. child themes – will be added. In an open community, chances are much higher that the framework will be sustainably expanded and become competitive. This step has also made the framework a lot more attractive for external developers.
What does the free release mean for existing customers?
Existing customers will have a different update process – more on that later. Beyond that, the MarketPress support via the helpdesk will remain unchanged. In the long term, support will be offered on GitHub via a yet to be defined community platform.
New users of the system will be able to download the relevantly latest version via GitHub and can take part in the future development. Existing customers will continue to find the relevantly current GitHub version in their MarketPress download area.
What about updates?
We have removed the MarketPress updater and refer to the GitHub updater so as to not stand in the way of development. Once you have installed that updater, you will be able to run your updates as usual.
What will happen to the YAML license?
The YAML license will no longer be provided after the move to Open Source. You can always purchase a license at http://yaml.de to remove the notice in the footer.
How can I help with further development?
GitHub allows everyone to contribute their bit for the future of the framework quickly and easily. A lot of software projects work hand in hand with their communities there.
Any tasks for implementation can be logged as issues on GitHub, where they can then be discussed in the community before implementation. The documentation is provided as a Wiki, everyone can edit or improve it. Translations can be requested directly via pull request. A direct change in the repository can be done on request.
Note: Please feel free to use the comment function if you have any questions about the future of Xtreme One. Customers should – in particular for technical issues – get in touch with support.
